Past Simple - Regular Verbs - Spelling



  • Add -ed to most verbs.


talk > talked 

  • For verbs with one syllable that end in a consonant-vowel-consonant, double the last letter and then add -ed.


stop > stopped,
rob > robbed

  • However, do not double the last letter if the verb ends in w, x


mix > mixed
show > showed

  • In longer words, if the last syllable of the verb ends with a consonant-vowel-consonant and that syllable is stressed, double the last consonant and then add -ed.


prefer > preferred
admit > admitted

  • However, do not double the last letter if the first syllable is stressed.


enter > entered

  • We double the last l even though the last vowel is not stressed.


travel > travelled
cancel > cancelled
level > levelled
marvel > marvelled

  • If the verb ends in e, just add -d.


create > created  
live > lived

  • If the verb ends in a consonant + y, change the y to i and add -ed.


try > tried

  • If the verb end in vowel + y, we add –ed


play > played

  • For verbs that end with the letter c, the letter k is added directly after the c and then -ed is added to the end of the verb.



panic > panicked
