Comparative Adjectives

Look at the pictures
Charles is thinner than Edward.
Edward’s hair is longer than Charles’s.
Charles’s teeth are bigger than Edward’s.
We use a comparative adjective + than when we want to compare two people or things.
A bike is cheaper than a car.
Sarah is more romantic than Jenny.
Tom’s house is better than mine
* We add –er to short adjectives.
Old ---- older
Tall ---- taller
* For short adjectives ending in –y, we take off the –y and add –ier.
Easy ---- easier
Healthy ---- healthier
* For short adjectives ending in consonant – vowel – consonant, we double the last consonant.
Big ---- bigger
Fat ---- fatter
Exception: Adjectives ending in –wSlow ---- slower
* With long adjectives, we use the words more / less …. than
Beautiful ---- more / less beautiful than
* Irregular comparatives
Good ---- better
Bad ---- worse
Far ---- further

We use the + superlative adjective + of / in when we want to compare three or more people or things.
This is the best place in the world.
The bee humming bird is the smallest of all birds.
This is the most beautiful house I’ve ever seen.
