The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon.
It was launched on July 16, 1969 and on July 20, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon, while Michael Collins orbited above.
President John F. Kennedy's goal was reaching the moon by the end of the 1960s. During a speech in 1961 he said: "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.”
Armstrong was the first one to set foot on the moon. He described the surface dust ("fine and almost like a powder"). Then he expressed: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"
