Who is Edmond Dantès?
He is the protagonist of the novel. Dantès is an honest sailor who turns bitter after being framed for a crime he does not commit. When Dantès finds himself free and enormously wealthy he rewards those who have helped him and punishes those responsible for his years of agony.

Edmond assumes different roles:
Count of Monte Cristo: When Edmond emerges from prison, he inherits a vast fortune. He is an educated and mysterious person who fascinates people and bases his existence solely on revenge.
Lord Wilmore: He is a kind Englishman and performs acts of generosity. He is almost the opposite of the Count.
Sinbad the Sailor: Edmond assumes this identity when he saves the Morrel family.
Abbé Busoni: The disguise of Abbé Busoni, an Italian priest, helps Dantès gain the trust of some people who the count wants to manipulate. In this way he obtains information about his enemies.
